Japan’s Kurume City will no longer host Team Kenya’s pre-Olympic training camp after pulling out due to concerns over the surge in Covid-19 infections across the city.
Kurume was set to host Team Kenya for 12 days, under full sponsorship for their stay, including accommodation, local travel in Japan, training venues and meals for the entire delegation.
Kurume has informed Kenya’s National Olympic Committee (NOCK) that the sports facilities that were scheduled to be used for the pre-Games training camps are being utilised as vaccination venues.
That means NOCK will have to find an alternative venue with time running out before the Games begin in Japan on July 3.
There have been calls to cancel the Games as the virus ravages Japan with many in the country saying they will boycott as the Asian nation averages just over 5,000 new infections daily.
As of Thursday, Japan had recorded 753,0000 Covid-19 cases with 13,222 deaths so far.
